How To Recognize The Symptoms of Stress

by Andrew Hoffmann

Most people who suffer with stress aren\’t aware of it until it\’s severe. One reason it can be hard to notice is that we all respond to stress a little differently, so it has many diverse symptoms. If you learn to recognize the symptoms of stress faster you\’ll be able to treat it sooner. Hopefully this article about the common symptoms of stress will help you identify them sooner.

Unfortunately, one of the first physiological systems to be negatively affected by stress is the digestive system, which explains the complaints of various illnesses in the stomach. You may want to seek medical care but, not surprisingly, your high levels of stress are the culprit. Your stomach seems to develop various minor illnesses while the situation that fills you with dread persists. If you\’re stressed out while you\’re eating this is a recipe for heartburn or a stomach ache. You should learn to separate your eating time from your worrying time, so to speak, so as to avoid these stress-related stomach problems.

Fortunately, these digestive health issues can be avoided by setting aside your worries while you are getting your physiological nourishment. One of the most worrying related issues with uncontrolled stress is the way it affects our good sense in choosing healthy food choices – we choose oft-unhealthy comfort foods because these give us a fast high, so to speak.

Substance abuse can be a serious symptom of stress that can have extremely damaging consequences. Becoming an alcoholic or a drug addict can also be one of the symptoms and consequences of stress. The temptation to drink alcohol and take illegal drugs is admittedly difficult to resist especially during times of unbearable stress but these are not the best solutions – temporary but not the best ones.

Different areas of the body tend to feel the pain of stress more than others. Muscle aches in the back, shoulders, and neck are some of the more common manifestations. If your area to hold tension is your neck, for example, you are likely to experience frequent tightness and stiffness in the area. While back pain may be a symptom of other physical conditions it is also commonly stress-related. If you\’re noticing a fair amount of stress-related pain in one area you can attempt deep breathing to lessen the pain. The symptoms of stress, as we\’ve seen, can vary quite a bit, and they\’ll be a little different in every case. Allowing stress to get out of control can cause you some real harm physically and emotionally although there are both good and bad stresses. For that reason alone you need to identify the symptoms and treat them accordingly.
