Accelerated BSN Degree – Qualifications Required To Get Into An ABSN Program

by Marcella Brennan

Accelerated nursing programs can be a fantastic way to get a head start on a brand new and exciting career. Getting started the right way though means you know not only what to expect, but what you need beforehand for a smooth transition. Read this guide to help understand all of the requirements and prerequisites of an accelerated BSN.

One of the most important things to realize is that most people going for accelerated BSNs are pursuing a second degree. This means they already have a bachelor\’s in another field. Therefore, an accelerated program for nursing of this form of course requires that bachelor\’s in order to get started.

In addition to possessing a degree in a previous course of study, a prospective student for accelerated BSN degrees need to have minimum GPAs. Most programs want you to have a 3.0. This is because the programs want to know that you are really serious about learning, and that you\’ve proven to be a good student.

An accelerated BSN requires this because of the way it\’s set up. You can finish the entire program in less than a year, as little as 10 months. This is possible because you don\’t relearn everything you did the first time through. Instead, you take your core classes and just a few bridge classes building on the previous coursework that you\’ve done.

Most of the time, you will have already completed a course of study that is applicable to an accelerated BSN program. These types of classes will be classes such as biology, or some other sort of science based program, for example. These classes will help the student nurse to realize their possibilities when they graduate.

Now, if you have not taken these classes or received an acceptable grade, it won\’t affect your admission into a nursing program. Instead, it means you\’re going to have to take the course as a piece of your BSN, which means you will be adding more work and more time into the length of your new studies.

Different accelerated nursing programs are going to vary with regards to specific requirements. The one that is right for you will be your decision. Make sure that whatever program you decide to chose, you chose one that is fully accredited, and will help you pass the NCLEX-RN, and prepare you for the joys and challenges of nursing.

Again, before you complete any of the accelerated nursing programs, you need to complete another degree plan first. You have to meet minimum GPA requirements, and you have to have some prerequisite course requirements met. If you do enough checking around, you\’ll be sure to find the program that is right for you.
